Politics
The Politics curriculum at Westfield Academy
Politics is a subject that inspires students to become confident and independent learners who can understand different political theories and viewpoints to draw their own conclusions and judgements. This supports students in the development of their knowledge of the UK and the wider world. Politics teaches students to argue, listen, understand and respect the views of those around them and to help them to be valuable members of the local and national community.
At Westfield Academy, students are supported in becoming independent in their learning, allowing them to take ownership of and become proficient in skills and concepts covered over the duration of their course. We emphasise this through the use of the Westfield Way in our daily teaching and learning practices. Students are supported in building independent study skills through the regular use of extended reading and writing tasks. Politics offers students the unique opportunity to study current affairs in both the UK and the wider world alongside their study of political theory. Pupils develop an awareness of different political views, change and continuity within politics over time and learn to debate, argue and form opinions with confidence.
Politics in the sixth form
At key stage 5, students will continue to use the Edexcel specification and will study British Government & Politics, Core Political Ideas and USA Government & Politics.
A-Level Politics offers the students the opportunity to study both British and American politics, understanding the core values that underpin both. Students have opportunities to study and evaluate current affairs and examine links to historical political arguments and theory. Students also study core theories which underpin many current political ideologies. We endeavour to further immerse students by visiting key political sites such as Downing Street and the UK Parliament as well as meeting with people involved in politics.
A-level Politics provides students with the skills of analysis and evaluation which are invaluable in any job and an integral component of many degree courses. A- level politics is a stimulating and challenging subject that is a very popular subject at Westfield Academy.
Students have the opportunity to further their studies in politics at university and pursue careers in government, education and journalism.
