MATHS STATEMENT

Vision

Our Mathematics curriculum is broad, demanding and deepens students' knowledge. Our vision is to develop well-rounded, confident and responsible individuals, who strive to achieve their full potential through a culture of high expectations. We will do this by providing a welcoming, safe and calm learning environment in which everyone is equal, and all achievements are celebrated.

At Westfield Academy, the importance of Mathematics is emphasised daily, as our teachers are quite enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject. Our faculty philosophy is that "Mathematics is a universal language, we use it to explore and explain the world around us through numbers, symbols, diagrams and words".

What do students learn in Maths?

Our core curriculum has a good balance between knowledge and skills. It also goes beyond basic national curriculum requirements, emphasising the importance of a creative, student-centred curriculum which is suited to the context of our school community. All students, within the same tier, have identical objectives. The scheme is inclusive, and we scaffold to allow our students to be successful. Topics, concepts and curriculum connections help all learners to see the connections between all topics in Maths, as well as careers and other subjects. We believe that correcting mistakes is the most sustainable pathway to learning this way; we reduce the fear of trying.

What skills do students acquire?

Our extracurricular activities present students with the opportunity to shine in practical programmes outside the normal curriculum, build their confidence, improve their learning skills and raise their own expectations of what they can achieve. This allows students of all abilities to engage with challenges, enhance a wide range of skills, make real progress in developing their skills and improve their academic performance at school. Our trips link curriculum learning to career development and enable students to encounter further and higher education opportunities.

Our intent is that the curriculum:

  • Enables high standards of academic achievement, where outcomes empower students to progress to Higher Education.
  • Provides a broad, diversified and knowledge-rich curriculum that is stimulating, comprehensive and accessible for all students.
  • Delivers opportunities for students to learn to be successful, to gain useful, transferable skills whilst also acquiring relevant knowledge.
  • Expands students' perspectives through a range of spiritual, moral, social and cultural opportunities to promote their sense of moral and social responsibility.
  • Ensures that all students are able to thrive and develop as healthy individuals and good citizens.
  • Ensures that all students are safe and understand how to stay safe.
  • Provides an appropriate range of opportunities and experiences to inspire students to succeed in the next stage in their education, training or employment.
  • Closing the disadvantaged gap – targeted support to achieve and SEND support.
  • Challenges to stretch our gifted mathematicians.
  • Ample opportunities for students to get feedback and, therefore, to learn from prior work.
