Personal Development

PSHE at Westfield Academy

At Westfield Academy, our core values — Believe, Strive, Achieve — shape our vision for PSHE. We aim to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to thrive beyond school, both academically and as well-rounded, engaged citizens.

Our PSHE curriculum is designed with our students in mind, ensuring they see themselves represented in the topics we explore and have opportunities to contribute to the issues addressed. We go beyond statutory requirements to provide a broad, aspirational, and student-centred programme that fosters critical thinking, debate, and empathy.

Through The Westfield Way, we encourage students to take increasing responsibility for their learning, supporting their development of independent skills in reading, writing, and discussion.

Our PSHE Curriculum Aims to:

  • Inspire aspiration and achievement across all areas of learning.
  • Provide an inclusive and accessible curriculum for all students.
  • Equip students with key transferable skills for future careers and life.
  • Develop empathy and encourage students to engage with diverse perspectives.
  • Promote spiritual, moral, social, and cultural awareness.
  • Ensure students understand how to stay safe, including in relationships and online.
  • Educate students on legal matters such as equality, consent, and digital safety.
  • Offer age-appropriate guidance on relationships and wellbeing.
  • Provide experiences that prepare students for their next steps in education, training, or employment.
  • Support disadvantaged students and those with SEND through targeted initiatives.

Our approach ensures that every student at Westfield Academy is empowered to achieve their full potential in a safe, supportive, and ambitious learning environment.

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered by form tutors using structured lesson slides and interactive booklets, ensuring a consistent and meaningful learning experience. In addition, key topics are reinforced through assemblies featuring guest speakers and external organisations, providing students with diverse perspectives and real-world insights.

As part of our PSHE curriculum, we work with a range of charities that provide valuable information and support on key topics. Organisations such as ChildlineNSPCCMindStonewallServices for Young People and Diversity Role Models offer guidance on mental health, safeguarding, equality, and social issues. These trusted charities help enrich our curriculum by providing expert resources, workshops, and support services for students.

PSHE is a vital part of our students' education, helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate life confidently and responsibly. The topics covered, including mental health, relationships, safety, and social responsibility, align with British Values such as respect, tolerance, and democracy, ensuring that students are equipped to contribute positively to society.
