Performing Arts

Drama is offered at KS3, KS4 and KS5. The faculty has a Drama Studio with an extensive prop cupboard and technical equipment for lighting and sound.

At KS3 each student has one hour a week and lessons cover a comprehensive curriculum ranging from Mime and Documentary Drama in Year 7, through to Storytelling, Comedy and Shakespeare in Year 8.

GCSE Drama currently follows Edexcel syllabus in which students undertake the writing and performing of scripts to an audience and learning about practitioners whose work has transformed the world of theatre.

A level students study Edexcel Drama and Theatre Studies, continuing their study of script and practitioners and giving a performance outside the school grounds as their final assessed piece in Year 13.

Music is offered at KS3, KS4 and KS5. The faculty boasts a Mac suite, which runs Logic Pro and Garageband, as well as Sibelius, music notation software, available for our GCSE and A level students. A practice block sits at the heart of the school buildings and is open to students of all ages who wish to rehearse and hone their talents in well-equipped practice rooms which are bookable at break and lunch times.

The Music department is equipped with electric pianos, drum kits, guitars and basses and peripatetic staff from Hertfordshire Music Services are ever present within the department providing individual and group lessons to students throughout the school day.

KS3 Music leads students through the basics of keyboard playing and music theory as well as the creative side of composition and performance techniques, studying a wide variety of music from ‘20th century Minimalism’ and ‘Pop Music’, to ‘Theme and Variations’ and ‘Film Music’.

Our GCSE students undertake Edexcel syllabus, which focuses on the three main areas of Music; Composing, Performing and Appraising – analysing set works. Students are encouraged to take part in all aspects of performance throughout the school year from the time they enter Year 7.

KS5 Music is currently following the Level 3 BTEC in Music Technology focusing on Events Support in which the students are undertaking exciting projects both in school and with theatres in the surrounding area.
