Geography

The Geography curriculum at Westfield Academy

Geography is a subject that inspires students to become confident and independent learners who can understand and use different knowledge and skills to complement them in school and in the wider world. Geography teaches students to argue, listen, understand and respect the views of those around them and to help them to be valuable members of the local and national community.

Geography offers the opportunity to develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places - including defining their physical and human characteristics, and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes. At key stage 3, all students study geography. Students will study Fantastic Places, Tourism, Africa, Volcanoes, Climate Change, Antarctica, Conflict, Global Biomes, Ocean Literacy, Superpowers, what is an Economy and Earthquakes.

GCSE Geography enables pupils to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experience of fieldwork. This deepens their understanding of geographical processes. At GCSE, students will also learn to interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). They will investigate how to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including numerical and quantitative, as well as written methods.

At key stage 4, Geography becomes an option subject. Students will use the Edexcel specification and will study topics such as global geographical issues, hazardous earth, development dynamics, challenges of an urbanising world and UK geographical issues.

Geography in the Sixth Form

A-level Geography provides students with the skills of analysis, examination and evaluation, which are invaluable in any job and an integral component of many degree courses. A- level Geography  is a stimulating and challenging subject at Westfield Academy.

At key stage 5, students will continue to use the Edexcel specification and will study topics such as, Tectonic Processes and Hazards, landscape systems, processes and change, Globalisation, the water cycle and water insecurity and Global Development and Connections.

Students can go on to further their studies in Geology, anthropology and sociology and pursue careers in environmental science, landscaping, surveying and urban planning.
